Locks Gallery is pleased to present Jennifer Bartlett: Interlude, a solo exhibition of works on paper. Including pastels, gouaches, and watercolors, sixteen works on paper will be on view in conjunction with another Bartlett exhibition, Recitative, featuring a monumental installation of the same name. Interlude marks Bartlett’s twenty-second exhibition with the gallery over the past three decades.
While large-scale works Rhapsody (1975-76), Song (2007), and Recitative (2009-10) were created in Bartlett’s New York studio, painted section by section and never seen in their entirety until fully installed in a large enough gallery space, her travel drawings provide a different perspective outside of the studio and capture a moment en plein air.
Interlude covers a period of ten years from the 1990s to the late aughts, and extensive research revealed nearly four hundred works from this period. Never shown together until now, this group of work was amassed from a number of private collections. Bartlett truly understands the environment that she is observing and uses pastel, watercolor, and gouache to masterfully convey the scenery in the places she traveled. Bartlett’s passion is in observing nature with her travel drawings a foundational inspiration used to execute her more monumental works.
Jennifer Bartlett (b. 1941) received her B.A. from Mills College, CA, and her B.F.A. (1964) and M.F.A. (1965) from Yale University. Her work is represented in over one hundred museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, NY; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY; the Philadelphia Museum of Art, PA; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, CA; the Tate Modern, London; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, CA; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, TX; and the Whitney Museum of American Art, NY. Her recent retrospective History of the Universe, curated by Klaus Ottmann traveled to the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, PA and Parrish Art Museum, NY. Other solo exhibitions have taken place at the Brooklyn Museum, NY; The Tate Gallery, London, England; and The Wadsworth Atheneum, Hartford, CT.
