Locks Gallery is pleased to present Warren Rohrer: Field and Pond, an exhibition of paintings on view November 2 – December 5, 2012. There will be an opening reception on Friday, November 2, from 5:30-7:30 pm.
This exhibit of over twenty paintings dating from 1966 to 1982 is the largest display of Rohrer's work at Locks since 1995. It showcases Rohrer's increasingly abstract and geometric representations of his rural surroundings, beginning with several early, rarely-displayed works from private collections. These pieces further establish Rohrer's consistent eye for abstraction over the course of his career.
Rohrer's landscape-derived imagery is deeply tied to his personal resonance with Southeastern Pennsylvania (his ancestors settled in Lancaster County in the 1700s). This connection has been invoked repeatedly by critics and curators when analyzing his work; Susan Rosenberg wrote for Rohrer's 2003 museum retrospective that the artist found his voice in “the landscapes of his beginnings” and “discovered in his unique heritage the basis for inventing his artistic originality.”
Rohrer painted regularly en plein air in the 1960s and 1970s, when his studio and home were in the countryside in Christiana, Pennsylvania, close to his birthplace.
Locks Gallery began representing Warren Rohrer in 1972. This is Locks' 19th exhibition of Rohrer's art, and a product of its research towards a comprehensive book documenting his life’s work.
Warren Rohrer taught for 25 years at the Philadelphia College of Art. His paintings are represented in many museums collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Denver Art Museum, Smith College Museum of Art and the Delaware Art Museum.
