Press Release

Locks Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of recent paintings and drawings by Joanna Pousette-Dart (American, b. 1947). Following her inclusion in the 2017 group exhibition Shape Paintings, this will be the artist’s first solo exhibition with the gallery.

Pousette-Dart’s body of work extends the traditional format of painting through a process which often begins with drawing as entry into space itself. Interested in the relationship between light and form, her shaped configurations of color and biomorphic contour delve into the experience of gravity and motion. Evoking the curvature of earth’s horizon or the shape of a human eye, each canvas appears as though oscillating in motion, creating a spatial continuum beyond the work.

In these recent abstractions, the artist activates a perceptual distortion between figure and ground, rendering both independent of one another. As Pousette-Dart describes, “I think of the shape of the painting as a space being edited by my peripheral vision. While the painting is meant to be whole within itself, I would like it to feel as though it’s part of a larger whole extending beyond the frame. I’d like the rhythm and the light of the painting to reverberate beyond its edges.”

Located on the second floor gallery, Joanna Pousette-Dart: Floating World will be viewable by appointment only and is paired with recent work from Philadelphia- based painter Neysa Grassi on the first floor. Please contact the gallery directly at info@locksgallery.com to arrange a date and time. In accordance with recent safety measures surrounding the Covid-19 outbreak, masks will be provided upon entry and must be worn for the duration of the visit.

Joanna Pousette-Dart (b. 1947) holds a BA from Bennington College, Vermont (1968). She has had recent solo exhibitions at the Wiesbaden Museum in Wiesbaden, Germany (catalogue available); Lisson Gallery, New York, NY, and Texas Gallery, Houston, TX. Her work is included in the collections of Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA; Brooklyn Museum of Art, Brooklyn, NY; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, NY; Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY; Indianapolis Museum of Art, Indianapolis, IN and Portland Art Museum, Portland, OR.
