Press Release

An exhibition of recent paintings by Elizabeth Osborne will be on view at Locks Gallery from November 3 through December 17, 2004. There will be an opening reception for the artist on Friday, November 5, 2004 from 5:30 to 7:30pm.

Elizabeth Osborne is nationally recognized for her elegant, intelligent and inventively abstract paintings of landscapes and interior still-life scenes. Rendered in bright, evocative hues, Osborne  's paintings and works on paper reveal a sophisticated sense of color and light in understated compositions that are rendered with assured bands of pure color and surprising touches of delicately drawn details.

Born in Philadelphia, Osborne attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts where she was the recipient of several prestigious fellowships, including a Fulbright Award. Osborne continued her studies at the University of Pennsylvania where she received her B.F.A. She returned to P.A.F.A. in 1961 as an instructor and continues to teach there today. Osborne was only the third woman to be hired as an instructor at the Academy, making her a pioneer and mentor to a generation of Philadelphia artists.

Her work is in many public and private collections including the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; the Pennsylvania State Museum; the Delaware Art Museum; the Marian Koogler McNay Art Museum, San Antonio, TX; Bryn Mawr College; and the Woodmere Art Museum. Elizabeth Osborne  's prints will be the subject of a retrospective exhibition at The Print Center in Philadelphia in May 2005.
