September 2009, Philadelphia, PA – Locks Gallery is pleased to present Drawing, works by artists utilizing a variety of media, techniques, and scale. The exhibition will be on view November 6–28, 2009. There will be an opening reception on Friday, November 6, 2009 from 5:30 - 7:30 pm.
This exhibition presents drawings by painters, sculptors, and photographers whose work in drawing is as integral to their artistic practice as their primary medium. Whether the artist works in abstract or representational imagery, conceptual or figurative subject matter, or in small scale or large format, this show presents works on paper that were created in the process of artistic maturation.
For artist Jennifer Bartlett, her most well known painting Rhapsody, on 987 baked enamel plates, was sketched out in 100 100 preparatory drawings that mapped subjects and color schemes. For abstract painter Warren Rohrer, working on paper proved to strengthen his techniques of mark making and texture.
Artists include Edna Andrade, Jennifer Bartlett, Alexander Calder, Jane Irish, Willem de Kooning, Arshile Gorky, Philip Guston, Sol LeWitt, Henri Matisse, Suzanne McClelland, Sarah McEneaney, Ree Morton, Robert Motherwell, Alice Neel, Elizabeth Osborne, Pablo Picasso, and Warren Rohrer.
