Jane Irish is a contemporary history painter. Her work blends Baroque opulence with images of colonialism and its resisters, often centering upon Vietnam as a locus of imperialism from French colonization to the American War. Traveling to historic sites in Europe, Vietnam, and the United States, Irish records domestic spaces of colonial power in tempera and gouache, a process of visual research from which she develops large-scale paintings that synthesize architectural, temporal, and geopolitical space.

Featuring over 100 paintings and ceramics, this monograph is the first to fully survey Irish’s trajectory from the early 1980s to the present, including poems by Vietnam veteran poet W.D. Ehrhart and the 18th-century Vietnamese poet Hồ Xuân Hương that have served as key references for the artist.  Texts include an interview with Nato Thompson and an essay by scholar Glenn Adamson.
