Having consistently experimented and pushed the limits of scale and proportion in his work, Jun Kaneko is an acclaimed pioneer of monumental ceramic sculpture.
The Hall of Nations at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. will be home to a dramatic installation of Kaneko's signature monumental Dangos along with other new large-scale works from April 9 through May 19, 2014. The Kennedy Center exhibition is organized in conjunction with Washington's National Opera's presentation of Jun Kaneko's production of Mozart's The Magic Flute.
The Magic Flute is Jun Kaneko's third opera production, following Beethoven's Fidelio and Puccini's Madama Butterfly. In 2009, Locks Gallery in collaboration with the Opera Company of Philadelphia, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Kimmel Center, and City Hall/the City of Philadelphia presented a city-wide celebration when Madama Butterfly debuted at the Kimmel Center.
Kaneko's The Magic Flute will run at the Kennedy Center from May 3 through May 18, 2014. Kaneko's acclaimed costume and set design with dramatic immersive projections of his drawings premiered on the west coast with the San Francisco Opera in 2012. San Francisco will host the west coast debut of Madama Butterfly this summer.
