Dona Nelson has been recognized as one of the most innovative painters since the 1970s. Since 2003, Nelson has been making double-sided paintings, liberating their canvases from the wall. These works are novel in the way that both sides of the canvas are interconnected, demanding more active, physical viewership. Made through processes of staining and soaking raw canvases, these gestural, richly complex compositions demonstrate the artist’s rigorous commitment to exploring the possibilities of material invention. Critics have compared Nelson’s work to those of leading second-generation Abstract Expressionists, including Lee Krasner, Joan Mitchell, and Helen Frankenthaler, as well as Color Field painters including Morris Louis and Sam Francis. Nelson’s work has been exhibited internationally and this presentation follows Locks Gallery’s recent solo exhibition with the artist in April 2024.
Organized annually by the Art Dealers Association of America, and benefitting Henry Street Settlement, one of New York’s leading social service, arts, and health care organizations, The Art Show brings together the country’s top galleries to showcase incisively curated exhibitions of both historical and contemporary works.
