September 2009, Philadelphia, PA – Locks Gallery is pleased to present Water is Best, paintings by gallery artists inspired by the appearance or the resonance of water. The exhibition will be on view October 21 through November 28, 2009. There will be reception on Friday, November 6, 2009 from 5:30 - 7:30 pm.
Though water is an oft-repeated subject through the ages, it has also proven to be a vital and compelling theme for contemporary artists. Water is Best features artists Jennifer Bartlett, Kate Bright, Thomas Chimes, Joy Feasley, Neysa Grassi, Alex Katz, Eileen Neff, Warren Rohrer, Susan Rothenberg, Pat Steir, and Ena Swansea. The Locks exhibit will include multiple paintings and a photograph by several of the artists, highlighting different periods of their work.
The title for the exhibition comes from the Ancient Greek lyric poet Pindar, who in his epic odes celebrating Olympians, wrote that water was worth as much as gold.
