Herb and Dorothy Vogel, a couple who lived on the salary of a postal worker and librarian, came to amass one of the most eclectic collections of Conceptual and Minimalist works of art, eventually donating over 4,000 pieces to museums across the country. When they made their first large donation to the National Gallery of Art in the 1990s, the director, J. Carter Brown called their collection “a work of art in itself.” The Vogels are a great example of how a collection can become an important context for a work of art and moreover, become a reflection of the people who shaped them–embodying the unique values, narrative, and vision that each collector cultivates. Now in its second year, our holiday presentation features never before exhibited works from a group of our gallery artists and a selection of staff favorites from the gallery’s history. Each artist featured in the exhibition will have a series of works on view selected by the staff to be approachable for emerging collectors and as special gifts. This year’s holiday show celebrates a robust year of museum exhibitions of gallery artists including Edna Andrade at the Harnett Museum of Art in Richmond, VA, and Jennifer Bartlett at the Cleveland Museum of Art Joy Feasley’s new paintings from her collaborative shaker-inspired Fabric Workshop & Museum exhibition and Sarah McCoubrey’s butter paper gouaches from her solo exhibition at SUNY Cortland will be on view for the first time at the gallery. We are also featuring new works by artists who are busy preparing for their 2016 solo exhibitions at the gallery with raku slabs and construction ceramics by Jun Kaneko and new works on paper by Jane Irish and Sarah McEneaney.
Please join us for a special reception on Friday, November 20th from 5:30 to 7:30pm.
